TUESDAY OF THE 25th WEEK IN ORDINARY OF THE YEAR (A)
MYSTERY OF THE DAY: Sorrowful
CELEBRATION OF THE DAY: Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs
The names of these two Oriental martyrs in the time of Diocletian appear in the Roman Canon.
TABLE OF THE WORD:Ezra 6:7-8.12.14-20; Luke 8:19-21
THEME: Let us be the doers of the Word.
THE WORD
INSPIRATION
Indeed, there is power in the Word. It is only in the Word of God that comfort and consolation can be found. It is a light that dispels darkness as the Psalmist says:
"Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. It shows me the way wherein I should go..." (Psalm 119:105) Evangelist John in his proclamation describes the Word as water which cleanses us of our dirt when he says: "Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you." (John 15:3)
Based on this, that our Lord in today's gospel pericope reminded us of the efficacy of this same Word; by stating that those who hear the Word and keeps it are His own. That is to say, we cannot just claim to be His without carrying the mark of the Word on our bodies, without being moderated by this same Word. In His (Jesus) response, when He was told that His mother and brethren were looking for Him, He replied: "My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it.” (Luke 8:21)
It was Indeed a response that provoked questions like: Why such derogatory statement? Does it means that His mother doesn't hear the Word, or put same into action? Absolutely, No. It was rather a moment where He introduced Her mother as one who hear the Word and put it into action.
However, many I stances in the Holy Scrioture affirms this, a look at (Luke 1:38; 2:19,51) brings to fore testament on this, when our Mother Mary heard what the angel said, She took it to heart and then carry out the message to the latter. Also, at the wedding feast at Cana, our Mother transformed the Word into action when she says: "Do whatever He tells you..." (cf. John 2:1-11)
Beloved in Christ, it is a clear fact that each and everyone of us are hearers of the Word either through the megaphone hanging close to our parameter fences, on radio, television, social media handles and the rest of other channels. Amidst these opportunities, have we been able to call ourselves "real doers of the Word" or we are merely "the hearers of the Word."
Finally, with this exhortation, let us put in our best to be both the hearers and doers of the Word, for it is in doing this that the Word itself will become flesh among us, thus, bringing about the abiding presence of God in our lives.
PRAYER
May you be magnified, O Lord, by the revered memory of your Saints Cosmas and Damian, for with providence beyond words you have conferred on them everlasting glory, and on us, your unfailing help. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
+ May the Lord in His infinite mercy bless and keep us, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
